CONUA calls for urgent action after Kebbi school abductions

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has expressed deep concern over the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Kebbi State, lamenting that years after the Chibok and Dapchi tragedies, Nigeria still struggles to guarantee the safety of learners and educators.

In a statement, the National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, called for urgent measures to halt the rising trend of school kidnappings across the country.

“While we acknowledge and appreciate the tireless efforts, sacrifices, and even recent losses within our security forces—including the tragic death of Brigadier General Uba and other gallant officers—CONUA identifies with the nation in mourning and insists that such sacrifices must translate into a Nigeria where the security of lives and property is assured,” the statement read.

Dr. Sunmonu urged the Federal Government to launch an immediate and transparent rescue operation and to fast-track a national school-safety strategy. He emphasized the need for rapid-response deployments, fortified security around vulnerable schools, psychosocial support for victims, and long-term interventions addressing economic and intelligence gaps that fuel these attacks.

“The protection of pupils, teachers, and academic communities—and indeed the safety of all Nigerians, irrespective of colour, creed, ethnicity, or location—must now be elevated to an urgent national priority,” the union added.
