Buni: Yobe LGAs functional, no IDP camps

Damaturu — Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has declared that all local government headquarters in the state are fully functional and accessible, attributing the development to sustained security and reconstruction efforts by his administration.

Buni spoke while receiving editors of Vanguard who presented him with a nomination letter for a Good Governance Award.

According to the governor, one of his administration’s greatest achievements is the successful resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) back to their communities, noting that Yobe currently has no established IDP camps.

“Our strategy was to return people to their communities. Some may prefer to remain in cities, and that is understandable, but we do not operate formal IDP camps,” he said.

He explained that the government prioritised restoring security and rebuilding infrastructure in frontline local government areas affected by insurgency, particularly seven of the most impacted councils, to encourage the return of residents.
“That is my major achievement. It shows that our local governments are peaceful and secure, and that people can live there without fear,” Buni added.

The governor further disclosed that his administration deliberately invested in critical infrastructure, including water supply, healthcare facilities, schools, roads and markets, to support stable community life.
On healthcare, Buni reiterated his commitment to ensuring that each of the 178 electoral wards in the state has at least one functional Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC). He revealed that 142 PHCs have been completed so far.

To support the health sector, the state has employed over 3,500 health workers and provided essential utilities, including solar-powered electricity for communities not connected to the national grid.

“We are proud that Yobe has emerged as a national leader in primary healthcare delivery,” he said, adding that the state has won multiple awards, including cumulative grants of $1.2 million as of March this year.
In the education sector, the governor said his administration has undertaken massive infrastructural upgrades and recruited 7,500 qualified teachers to revitalise basic and secondary education.

“We are not just rebuilding schools; we are rebuilding futures,” he stated.
Buni also highlighted economic initiatives, noting that the state has constructed nine ultra-modern markets across key towns, including Damaturu, Gashua, Nguru, Geidam and Potiskum, spanning the three geopolitical zones.

Despite operating under limited resources and security challenges, the governor emphasised his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“Our budgeting and expenditures are made public online. We are hiding nothing. Transparency is a choice, and we have chosen to remain accountable,” he said.

While thanking Vanguard for the recognition, Buni reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to sustain development efforts across the state.
