Benin President Wadagni reshuffles military leadership after failed coup

Benin Republic’s President, Romuald Wadagni, has announced a major shake-up of the country’s military leadership, nearly a year after an attempted coup against his predecessor, Patrice Talon.

The changes, announced on Wednesday, come amid growing security concerns over jihadist activities in the country’s northern region, where armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have intensified attacks along the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger.

In December 2025, Beninese soldiers loyal to the government thwarted an attempt by some military officers to overthrow Talon, with France and Nigeria reportedly providing assistance to foil the plot.

Following the failed coup, Talon declared that the situation in the country was completely under control, crediting loyalist troops with preventing the overthrow of his administration.

Wadagni, who served as economy minister under Talon for 10 years, eventually succeeded him as president in April 2026.

As part of the latest military restructuring, Wadagni appointed General Abou Issa as the new head of the armed forces, replacing General Fructeux Gbaguidi, who has been redeployed as permanent secretary of the National Defence and Security Council.

The president also appointed Colonel Andre Dokoui Fofo to lead the army, while Colonel Herve Setondji Allotchenou was named head of the air force. Captain Dossa Hounkpatin will take charge of the navy.

The appointments come as Wadagni faces mounting pressure to address the deteriorating security situation in northern Benin, which has increasingly come under threat from jihadist groups operating across the country's borders.

His administration also faces diplomatic challenges arising from strained relations with neighbouring Sahel countries, particularly Burkina Faso and Niger, both of which are under military rule.

The military governments in the two countries have expressed distrust over Benin's close relationship with France, further complicating regional security cooperation as Wadagni seeks to contain the growing threat.
