Bauchi Emir urges govt to subsidise diabetes medication

The Emir of Bauchi, Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, has called on all tiers of government to subsidise diabetes drugs amid the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
Speaking through the Galadiman Bauchi, Ibrahim Saidu Jahun, during a road walk organised by the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria (IDN) and the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Bauchi State Chapter, the emir lamented the high out-of-pocket expenses faced by people living with diabetes.
He said the soaring cost of essential medications has become unaffordable for many patients.
He urged federal, state and local governments to include diabetes medicines on the subsidised drug list to reduce the financial burden on Nigerians managing the condition.
The emir also commended the NSN and its partners for sustained advocacy on diabetes prevention and healthy living.
In his remarks, the State Chairperson of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Comfort Daniel Madaki, said this year’s World Diabetes Day activities focused on providing accurate information on diabetes while promoting healthy eating, regular exercise and routine medical checks.
She added that free diabetes screenings were conducted at the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.
The road walk, themed “Diabetes and Well-being,” began at the Emir’s Palace, passed through major streets and ended at the Government House, Bauchi.
