Anambra demolishes brothel used for drug trafficking, prostitution, arrests 38

AWKA — Operatives of the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, have demolished a brothel in the Okpuno area of Awka, apprehending 38 persons reportedly involved in prostitution and drug trafficking. The suspects include 20 female commercial sex workers and 18 males.

Among those arrested were the manager, a supervisor, a bar attendant, and a storekeeper. The operatives described the facility as a major criminal hub engaged in the sale of illicit drugs and sexual exploitation.

Items recovered during the raid included Tramadol, Indian hemp, nitrous oxide, Rohypnol, and a locally made single-barreled short gun.

The manager, Paul Chibuike, admitted that drugs were sold on the premises but denied ownership of the firearm. He claimed some of the suspected sex workers were students who visited the centre on weekends to earn money for personal upkeep. Chibuike further revealed that he was managing the brothel on behalf of an employer who also owns another drug outlet on Abakaliki Street, a known red-light area in Awka.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, confirmed that the facility would be confiscated under the provisions of the State Homeland Security Law 2025, following the incriminating findings of the raid.

Following the operation, the Anambra State Government demolished the one-storey building that housed the brothel.
