THE Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, was yesterday, appointed as the new Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas.

Governor Seyi Makinde, made the announcement during a brief ceremony held at the House of Chiefs, Agodi, Ibadan.

The event, attended by traditional rulers and other dignitaries, marked a significant milestone in the leadership of the Oyo State Council of Obas.

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was conspicuously absent at the event.

Makinde, explained that the chairmanship of the council would henceforth be rotational among the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Alaafin of Oyo, and the Soun of Ogbomosoland, with each monarch serving a two-year term.

According to the governor, the arrangement is designed to foster unity, mutual respect, and cooperation among traditional institutions across the state.

 Makinde, added that the rotational system would enable each of the foremost traditional rulers to contribute meaningfully to governance and development efforts in Oyo State.

However, the absence of Owoade, at the event raised concerns. Although no official explanation was given, sources close to the palace suggested that the development might be linked to lingering disagreements within the state’s traditional council.

While, further clarification is expected as events unfold, the appointment of Olubadan, Ladoja, has been widely welcomed as a positive step towards strengthening traditional institutions in the state.

Meanwhile, stakeholders are closely monitoring the development as the state government is expected to release additional details regarding the appointment and the roadmap for the new leadership of the Oyo State Council of Obas. 

Makinde lied— Alaafin

“Meanwhile, Alaafin in a press statement signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaye, stated: “Attention of the Alaafin’s Palace has been drawn to a statement credited to Governor Seyi Makinde that he consulted with the three traditional rulers in the State, the Alaafin, the Olubadan and the Soun of Ogbomoso on the rotational Chairmanship of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

“The Palace hereby wants to state clearly that there was no time that His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade 1, held any meeting with either the State Governor or any of the two traditional rulers mentioned above.

“The Alaafin did not tell the Governor or make a categorical statement on his endorsement of rotational Chairmanship among the the three traditional rulers in the State.

“The position of the Alaafin and the entire Oyo Community on the general issue of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs, has been enunciated in a Memo delivered to His Excellency by the Oyo Council of Elders.

Recall that the former Governor Adebayo Alao Akala made the Chairmanship of the council rotational among the three prominent monarchs at the twilight of his tenure which the former Alaafin of Oyo, late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi objected.
