ADC faults Kebbi govt over silence on Shanga killings

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Kebbi State has criticised the state government over what it described as silence and inaction following recent killings in Shanga Local Government Area.
The party’s State Chairman, Safiyanu Bala, raised the concern in a New Year message issued to journalists on Thursday, warning that celebrations should not overshadow the persistent insecurity and hardship faced by residents.
Bala said insecurity, hunger and economic pressure continued to affect many Nigerians, stressing that the situation required urgent and decisive action from government at all levels.
He accused the Kebbi State Government of failing to respond adequately to the deteriorating security situation in Yauri Emirate, particularly in Shanga LGA, where he claimed residents had suffered repeated attacks in recent days.
According to him, several people were reportedly killed over consecutive days without a corresponding response from the authorities.
Bala described the situation as alarming, questioning what he called the government’s lack of urgency in addressing the violence.
He said residents of the affected communities were not seeking political favours but were demanding protection, justice and immediate intervention to prevent further loss of lives.
The ADC chairman also expressed concern over what he described as a shrinking democratic space in the country, alleging intimidation of opposition figures and increasing pressure on politicians to defect to the ruling party.
He further criticised current economic policies, particularly taxation measures, arguing that they were worsening the hardship faced by ordinary citizens already struggling with the high cost of living and insecurity.
Bala urged the Kebbi State Government to prioritise the safety of lives and property in Shanga and other vulnerable areas, calling for swift security intervention to restore peace and confidence among residents.
