2027: Makinde vows one-term presidency, challenges Tinubu on fuel prices
By Luminous Jannamike
Presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected in 2027, promising a transitional government of national unity while challenging President Bola Tinubu to publish the Federal Government’s petroleum pricing template.
Makinde said Nigerians deserved relief from economic hardship and the right to know how fuel prices were determined, accusing the Tinubu administration of failing to deliver on key promises, including electricity supply and alternative fuel policies.
Speaking at the APM North-East town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, the Oyo State governor said his party would pursue a different approach to governance, built around transparency, public participation and power-sharing.
He demanded that the Federal Government make its petroleum pricing template public, arguing that expertise in solving Nigeria’s problems was not the exclusive preserve of those in power.
“The fact that you are in government or the Presidential Villa does not make you the only Nigerians with sense. We have other citizens who can dissect issues and proffer solutions,” Makinde said.
He faulted the administration’s policies on compressed natural gas, CNG, electric vehicles and the naira-for-crude initiative, saying they had failed to deliver the expected results. He also recalled Tinubu’s pledge to fix electricity within four years.
Makinde said the 2027 election should mark a break from what he described as a culture of political deception, promising to be truthful with Nigerians about the challenges confronting the country.
“2027 will mark the end of the politics of lies and deceit. It is a time when we will all come together to establish a reset agenda and tell Nigerians the whole truth,” he said.
On concerns about the concentration of political power in one part of the country, particularly among northern stakeholders, Makinde pledged an inclusive administration that would accommodate the country’s diverse interests.
“I stand before you today to tell you that the government you will put in place from May 29, 2027, will be a transitional government of national unity. Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” he said.
Makinde explained that the party had delayed releasing its manifesto to hear from stakeholders before finalising its policy proposals.
Earlier, APM National Leader and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, declared that the party had become a force in the opposition, pointing to its governors, elected officials and growing membership.
“Whoever does not reckon with us is going to do so at his or her peril,” Mohammed said, urging supporters to rally behind the party’s presidential ambition.
He said APM was committed to national unity, mutual respect and equal opportunities for Nigerians regardless of their backgrounds.
The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, said Nigeria needed a fundamental reset, describing APM as a platform for patriotic citizens determined to change the country’s direction.
“Otherwise, we will continue to be in motion but without movement,” Daura said.
