Zamfara govt calls for decisive federal action over rising insecurity

Zamfara State Government has acknowledged a peaceful protest on Wednesday by residents of more than 30 villages in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area, who marched to the Government House in Gusau to demand urgent action against persistent killings and abductions.

Hundreds of demonstrators, mostly elderly women and nursing mothers from Jimrawa village in Dan Isa Ward, accused the state of neglecting their plight amid worsening bandit attacks. Some protesters said they had lost family members to killings and kidnappings, while others claimed many residents remained in captivity.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa, in a statement, said Governor Dauda Lawal sympathised with the affected communities and assured them that their concerns would be formally communicated to the Presidency and relevant federal agencies.

He noted that while internal security falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal Government, the state had launched the Zamfara Community Protection Guards and provided vehicles, logistics and other support to federal security agencies operating in the state.

Dantawasa stressed that more coordinated and decisive federal action is needed to permanently address insecurity in Zamfara.

The Commissioner urged residents to remain peaceful and vigilant, warning against political interests hijacking their concerns.
