Zamfara APC elders back consensus Primaries, endorse Tinubu, Lawal ahead of 2027

The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Group has thrown its weight behind the adoption of consensus arrangements during the party’s National Assembly primaries, describing the process as a strategic step toward strengthening unity, political stability, and internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group said the consensus option adopted across the state helped to avert political tension, reduce unnecessary rivalry, and promote harmony among party stakeholders, while positioning the APC for a stronger outing in future elections.

In a joint statement issued to journalists and signed by Hon. Adamu Magaji and Haruna Musa Mafara on behalf of the APC Elders Group and the Youths Initiatives Forum, the stakeholders commended the peaceful conduct of the primaries across the 14 local government areas of Zamfara State.

The forum specifically praised the roles played by key political figures, including Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, and other party leaders for ensuring a rancour-free exercise.

According to the statement, the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was instrumental in stabilizing the political atmosphere and fostering reconciliation among aggrieved stakeholders.

“The last minute intervention of Mr President through dialogue and reconciliation made it possible for the peaceful conduct of the primaries across the 14 local government areas of the state,” the statement read.

The group described Tinubu’s role as “fatherly and unifying,” noting that his commitment to peace in Zamfara reflected his broader national agenda of political stability and democratic consolidation.

“His love for Zamfara made it possible for him to intervene despite his tight schedule and other commitments to the nation. This intervention helped to save resources, reduce political tension, and prevent possible crises,” the statement added.

The elders maintained that consensus remains one of the most effective mechanisms for conflict management within political parties, especially in states where internal rivalry could undermine electoral fortunes.

They urged all party stakeholders in Zamfara to respect agreements reached during the primaries and sustain the spirit of dialogue, compromise, and political maturity in the interest of the APC and democratic stability in the state.

“The interest of peace and political cohesion in Zamfara should remain paramount above personal ambitions in order to strengthen the APC ahead of future elections,” the group stated.

The forum also pledged total support for the re-election bids of President Tinubu and Governor Dauda Lawal in 2027, expressing confidence in their leadership and commitment to governance.

The APC elders further commended Matawalle, Governor Lawal, and the national leadership of the APC in Abuja for supporting reconciliation efforts and preventing attempts by some political actors to create tension during the primaries.

Many Political observers were of the believe that endorsement of consensus arrangements in Zamfara reflects a growing trend among major political parties to prioritise internal stability and strategic alliances ahead of the next electoral cycle in Nigeria.
