United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the US will soon take a decision on whether to go back to war with Iran.

The war, which the United States started together with Israel in February, was meant to stop Tehran from building a nuclear weapon.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump asked if America should push the attacks further to make sure Iran's nuclear programme is completely destroyed and can never come back.

"I would rather not destroy the rest of the country if possible, but maybe I will have to. You'll know soon enough," he said.

Trump spoke after holding talks with his national security advisers, stating that the United States had already got everything it had wanted to control as far as Iran is concerned.

"Now we will make a decision," he added.

According to Axios, a US official said the US Central Command, CENTCOM, is getting ready for a possible return to full military operations in Iran. The command, however, has not yet got fresh orders from Washington.

While Trump is still weighing his next step, mediators have been travelling to Tehran in recent days for talks. Trump himself has also spoken recently about possible progress in negotiations to end the conflict.
