Woman dies shortly after alighting from commercial bus in Calabar

A middle-aged woman, Mrs Affiong Peters, has died after she reportedly slumped shortly after alighting from a commercial bus in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occurred at about 11:30pm on Saturday at Edgerly, along William George Street, in the state capital.

The Cross River State Police Command said the incident was reported at Atakpa Police Station by the driver of the mini-bus, Okon John.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, Mrs Peters had alighted from the vehicle alongside seven other passengers when she suddenly sat on the ground and became unresponsive.

“Concerned passengers assisted in returning her to the vehicle, and she was promptly taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for emergency medical attention,” Eitokpah said.

He added that despite medical efforts, the woman was later confirmed dead by doctors.

The police spokesman said the deceased’s family had been identified and informed of the incident, while arrangements were being made for the preservation of her remains.

Eitokpah said there was no evidence of foul play at the moment, adding that the matter was being handled in line with standard police procedures.

The incident has left residents of the area shocked, with many expressing sadness over the sudden loss of the woman.
