SOKOTO — Former Governor of Sokoto State and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on Thursday explained why he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the move represents a collective determination to protect Nigeria’s democracy and deliver responsible governance.

Speaking during the flag-off of a food distribution programme for residents and supporters loyal to him in Sokoto, Tambuwal said the decision, taken alongside his political associates, was motivated not by personal ambition but by a shared commitment to national progress and visionary leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic and political challenges.

He explained that Nigerians are increasingly yearning for purposeful leadership that restores confidence in the political system. The defection, he added, was carefully planned, following extensive consultations with experienced politicians and university scholars to assess the country’s political trajectory.

“These consultations revealed growing concerns that the current political path could gradually push Nigeria toward a one-party state, which is unhealthy for a vibrant democracy,” Tambuwal said.

He further noted that the political landscape is increasingly divided between supporters of the present administration and citizens dissatisfied with the prevailing governance, corruption, and alleged incompetence across various levels of government, including Sokoto State.

Tambuwal stressed that politics should focus on citizens’ welfare, aspirations, and livelihoods rather than the concentration of power among a few office holders. Citing recent elections in Lagos State, Katsina State, and Plateau State, he said voters are increasingly willing to challenge entrenched political dominance.

He assured supporters that neither intimidation nor political pressure would deter the ADC from pursuing credible leadership and defending democratic values. Tambuwal also raised concerns about certain provisions in the amended Electoral Act 2022, particularly timelines for party primaries, calling for further reflection to ensure fairness.

On leaving the PDP, Tambuwal cited internal disarray and weakening party structures, making it difficult for the party to function effectively. He revealed that about 1,900 political stakeholders were consulted before a unanimous decision was reached to adopt the ADC as their preferred platform.

The former governor expressed confidence that his new political alignment will strengthen democratic competition and provide Nigerians with credible alternatives ahead of future elections.
