We’re using research to increase revenue for devt – FIRS

ABUJA – The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a research-driven initiative aimed at boosting revenue and supporting national development.

The announcement was made at the inaugural FIRS Research Day in Abuja, led by FIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji. Key speakers included Halima Shehu, Director of Research and Statistics; Prof. Aisha Mahmoud Hamman, Special Adviser on Research & Statistics; and Prof. Mohammed Adaya Salisu, Chief Economic Adviser.

Three major projects were also unveiled: the FIRS Research Policy Document, the Tax Revenue Statistical Bulletin (1970–2022), and Volume 4 of the FIRS Journal of Tax Studies, now available online at www.fjts.online.

Dr. Adedeji urged all FIRS departments to integrate research findings into their work.

“Without research, we risk working in the dark; with it, we shine a light on the path ahead. Every question we ask, every data point we analyse, and every policy we shape brings Nigeria closer to prosperity,” he said.

Halima Shehu described the initiative as ‘a new beginning, not just a commemoration.’

“Research and reliable data are not optional, they are essential,” she stressed.

Prof. Hamman and Prof. Salisu stressed the importance of research in shaping tax policy in a changing global economy.

They noted that FIRS Research Day represents a significant step towards a more effective and innovative tax system, designed to boost revenue, strengthen accountability, and drive national development.
