Sequel to the flood prediction, and even before the prediction, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State gave Emergency Management Agency (Enugu SEMA) an approval to organise a training for the Local Emergency Management Committee members in the 17 local governments of the state and other stakeholders on the theme “Building and Strengthening Emergency Resilience in Enugu State”.

According to the head of Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (Enugu SEMA), Mrs. Chinasa Mbah, the programme was conducted at the 1st quarter of this year.
She said: “We equally collaborated with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Red Cross, among others, in carrying out Community Engagement Programmes.
“This is because community members are always the first responders in any emergency including flooding.
“Therefore, the capacity building helps to get them set for rescue of lives, property and economy during flooding and other types of emergency in the State. This is because disaster management is everyone’s responsibility.
“In addition, we run radio jingles and sensitisation programmes, especially in the communities we expect the likelihood of the flood incident. This is achieved through partnership with local government chairmen and the traditional rulers.
“Moreover, as part of development effort of Enugu Governor, there is massive construction of road projects across all the communities in the State. Each of the road has adequate drainages to contain water run off and reduce devastating impact of flooding in the State.
“Finally, the State Government through Enugu SEMA is working on stockpiling of relief materials to help assuage the adverse effect of the flooding on individuals if it eventually occurs.”
