KANO — The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, visited Kano on Sunday to meet with former Kano State Governor and political heavyweight, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The meeting at Kwankwaso’s Miller Road residence also saw the presence of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Senator Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, prominent activist Naajatu Mohammed, and other notable figures.

The gathering has stirred speculation about a potential political realignment, with some suggesting that Kwankwaso may be considering a move from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Addressing a large crowd during the annual Kwankwassiya Sallah festival, Obi emphasised that his visit was primarily to celebrate the festival and pay respect to Kwankwaso. He stressed, however, that his broader goal is to revive Kano’s economic and industrial power.

“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect to our leader. So thank you,” Obi said. “We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano. What we want to do is bring back the power of Kano—all those factories in Bompai, Sharada 1, Sharada 2, Bank of the North—we want to bring all of them back. Today is not politics; it is the celebration of Sallah.”

The event highlighted efforts by Obi and allies to reconnect with northern states and signal their commitment to economic revival, while also strengthening ties with established political figures in the region.

Kwankwaso, who hosted the gathering, welcomed the dignitaries and expressed his joy at seeing leaders and supporters unite in the festive spirit of the occasion.
