Unity Cup: Jamaica vow to stop Nigeria’s title defence

Jamaica midfielder Courtney Clarke has warned that the Reggae Boyz are determined to end the Super Eagles of Nigeria’s reign as Unity Cup champions when both sides meet in Saturday’s final in London.

Clarke spoke after Jamaica defeated India 2-0 in Wednesday’s semi-final clash at The Valley to set up another final showdown against the Super Eagles.

The encounter will mark the third consecutive time Nigeria and Jamaica will meet in the final of the Unity Cup, with the Super Eagles entering the game as defending champions and favourites after their commanding 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

Nigeria booked their place in the final on Tuesday night after debutant Femi Azeez scored twice in an impressive display against Zimbabwe at The Valley.

The Millwall winger opened scoring inside five minutes before adding a second-half goal to complete a dream debut for Éric Chelle’s side as the Super Eagles dominated possession and controlled the game from start to finish.

With confidence growing around the Nigerian team ahead of the final, Clarke admitted Jamaica face a difficult challenge against the three-time African champions but insisted the Reggae Boyz are ready for the battle.

“It’s just more of a thing we just have to do what we do, keep our energy, stick to the plan, and let football do the rest. Just to keep working and try to beat Nigeria,” Clarke said after Jamaica’s win over India.

The Super Eagles’ display against Zimbabwe has increased expectations among supporters, especially after Chelle handed opportunities to several new faces and fringe players during the semi-final.
