UK, Canada, Australia officially recognize state of Palestine

In a major diplomatic move, three world nations — the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia — have officially recognized Palestine as an independent state.

The announcement came first from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who said the recognition was aimed at reviving peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis.

“Today, to help restore the peace process and advance the two-state solution, the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine,” Starmer said in a statement on Sunday.

Shortly after, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the same decision on his official X handle.

“Canada recognizes the State of Palestine, and we extend our support to efforts that can bring lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis,” Carney wrote.

Hours later, Australia followed suit, confirming it had also granted full recognition to Palestine.

This brings the three countries in line with several others that have recently taken similar steps ahead of the United Nations General Assembly meeting set to begin on Monday.
