UK-based Nigerian surgeon, colleagues trek Sahara Desert to raise funds for hospital

London – UK-based Nigerian Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon, Dr. John O. Afolayan, along with colleagues Roozbeh Shafafy and Hanny Anwar, has embarked on a five-day, 100km trek across the Sahara Desert to raise funds for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, Greater London.

The challenge, which began on March 18, 2026, will see the team, joined by Mr. Anwar’s son, Farouk, navigating Morocco’s harsh terrain, including vast sand dunes and steep mountain passes. The physically and mentally demanding trek aims to support the hospital’s charitable efforts.

RNOH, part of the NHS, provides specialist orthopaedic care to patients nationwide, treating complex conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, and the spine, including serious injuries, spinal disorders, bone cancer, and degenerative joint problems. While core services are NHS-funded, charitable contributions enable the hospital to invest in advanced technology, pioneering research, and improved patient facilities.

Dr. Afolayan said the trek is a way to ensure that patients continue receiving world-class treatment. “I am proud to support this NHS charity and our patients at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Please support if you can,” he appealed.

Funds raised from the Sahara Desert trek will help RNOH maintain its position as a leading centre for specialist orthopaedic care and inspire others to contribute to the hospital’s mission.
