Two miners killed, others injured in Zamfara mining fight

Two miners have been killed and several others injured following a violent clash at a mining site in Abare of Zamfara State.
The incident was disclosed in a post shared on X on Saturday by security analyst, Zagazola Makama.
According to Makama, the clash happened on March 5 at about 8:30 a.m. at a mining site in the Abare area of Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
Security sources said the violence began when a member of an outlawed vigilante group known locally as Yan Sakai allegedly entered the mining site and attempted to force Muslim miners to observe the ongoing Ramadan fast.
The suspect, identified simply as Kaura, was said to have arrested some miners, accusing them of refusing to take part in the fasting period.
He was also alleged to have demanded compulsory levies from those he detained.
However, some of the miners reportedly resisted the action, arguing that the arrests and the levies were illegal.
The suspect was said to have initially left the area after facing resistance from the miners but later returned with other members of the group in an attempt to make more arrests.
This led to a confrontation between the two sides, creating panic and tension across the mining site.
During the clash, two miners were killed while five others sustained injuries.
Security personnel were later deployed to the scene after the incident was reported.
The injured victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment, while authorities have begun investigations to identify and arrest those responsible for the violence.
As of the time the report was filed, no arrest had been made.
