Trump’s Threat: China rejects foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs
The People’s Republic of China has reaffirmed its opposition to foreign interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs, particularly over recent allegations of Christian persecution and threats of military action issued by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, stated this on Thursday in a post on his official X account after meeting with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Dunhai said China remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s security efforts and long-term development priorities.
“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanctions and the use of force,” the ambassador said.
He added that China is “willing to continue supporting Nigeria in combating terrorism and maintaining domestic stability,” noting that Beijing backs development paths that “fit Nigeria’s national realities.”
The comments come amid global reactions following Trump’s recent statements threatening to deploy U.S. military force in Nigeria if alleged killings of Christians are not halted. The Nigerian government has strongly denied the accusations, describing them as misleading and harmful.
Earlier on Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a similar position. Spokesperson Mao Ning told journalists in Beijing that China “firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions” and rejects any interference disguised as concern for human rights or religion.
Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities insist the country’s security challenges are driven by terrorism and banditry, not religious targeting. The Federal Government has rejected Nigeria’s designation by the U.S. as a country violating religious freedom, stating that such conclusions are based on “inaccurate data and misrepresentation.”
The FG argued that both Christians and Muslims, officials maintain, have been victims of extremist violence.
