Tricyclist beats lover to death, abandons body with two children in Rivers

PORT HARCOURT — A tricycle rider identified simply as IK has allegedly beaten his lover to death and abandoned her body alongside her two children in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday at CPM Street in Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the woman died after being severely assaulted, after which the suspect allegedly left her body and the children inside a tricycle before fleeing the scene.

A resident, identified simply as Senibo, said neighbours were alerted early in the morning after a disturbing discovery of the lifeless woman and two children inside a parked tricycle.

Senibo said the matter was reported to the police at the Ozuoba Division in Obio/Akpor LGA.

He added that the elder child told police the suspect, who is her father, used an object to beat their mother at a guest house where they had lodged on Monday night.

According to the child’s account, the man allegedly abandoned the woman after she became weak and later left her body and the children in the tricycle before fleeing.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko (as applicable), said officers received a distress report from a passerby who discovered the woman and children inside a blue tricycle.

She said a patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene, where the woman was found lifeless alongside the two children aged about five years and six months.

According to her, the five-year-old child narrated that her father assaulted the mother during the night, after which he attempted to take her to a hospital where she was confirmed dead.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect abandoned the children and fled after the incident.

She said the deceased’s family has been contacted and the body deposited in a mortuary for preservation and investigation.

The police also confirmed that the children have been taken into protective custody by a relative, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect.
