Trailer–bus crash kills man in Anambra

One person has died and another was injured in a trailer and commercial bus crash at Igbariam Junction on the Nteje–Awka Road.

Anambra FRSC Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed the crash to journalists on Wednesday in Awka.

Asekhauno said the accident resulted from loss of control by the trailer driver.

She said the crash involved a red Coca-Cola trailer without a registration number and an ash-coloured Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA) bus.

Eyewitnesses said the ASMATA bus stopped to inspect a faulty tyre before one occupant left to get a vulcaniser.

They said the trailer attempted to manoeuvre when one tyre caught the bus and dragged it into a gutter.

FRSC personnel extricated the trapped occupants and cleared the road after lifting the trailer with a crane.

Asekhauno said four males were involved, with one injured and one confirmed dead.

She said the injured victim was taken to Chira Hospital, Awkuzu, while the body was deposited at Jerusalem Hospital, Nteje.

The Sector Commander condoled with the deceased’s family and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery.

She urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe speeds and avoid reckless manoeuvres.

Asekhauno said the incident highlights the need for drivers to maintain control and avoid dangerous road behaviour.
