Tension rises in Benue as residents raise alarm over influx of armed herdsmen

Residents of Logo Local Government Area LGA, in Benue state have raised alarm over what they describe as a heavy influx of armed Fulani herdsmen into the Gaambe-Tiev axis, a development that is reportedly heightening tension across affected communities.

Locals say the movement of the herders, who are said to be accompanied by large numbers of cattle, has created fear and uncertainty among residents, many of whom depend on farming for their livelihoods.

The situation, they warn, could escalate if urgent steps are not taken.

A community source, who spoke on Wednesday on condition of anonymity, described the development as troubling and potentially dangerous. “The influx of these armed men into our communities is worrisome. People are living in fear because we do not know what could happen next,” he said.

According to residents, the presence of armed individuals in the area has disrupted normal daily activities, with many farmers reportedly avoiding their farmlands due to safety concerns.

This, they say, could have serious implications for food production in the area.

Another resident and a renowned yam farmer in the area, Ukange Abogh, expressed concern over the growing tension, noting that the situation bears similarities to previous incidents that led to violent clashes in parts of the state.

“We have seen this pattern before, and it often does not end well. That is why we are calling for urgent intervention.

“Gaambe–Tiev is made up of known agrarian communities that experienced relative calm in recent times. With this influx, there is fear of possible breakdown of law and order,” he said.

He appealed to security agencies and relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent the situation from deteriorating and ensure the safety of lives and property.

“We are calling on the government and security agencies to step in immediately. Their presence will help calm nerves and prevent any form of crisis,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comments.
