Ilorin—Tension has gripped Sokunkpan village in Tsaragi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, following the gruesome lynching of the community’s Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu, by an angry mob over allegation that he was responsible for the death of a villager.

Meanwhile,Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the mob killing, describing the incident as “tragic and criminal.”

Vanguard gathered that the late Chief Imam was attacked after two brothers — Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana — accused him of causing the death of their sibling, 25-year-old Ibrahim Gana, who had fallen ill and died in the hospital.

Enraged by the loss, the brothers allegedly mobilised other villagers to the residence of the cleric, where he was violently assaulted with dangerous weapons until he died.

Spokesperson of the command, Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi, in a statement issued on Thursday, confirmed the development, warning against jungle justice and vowing that those involved would face the full weight of the law.

According to her, “The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of a tragic incident of culpable homicide that occurred in Tsaragi, Edu LGA of the state. On November 4, 2025, at about 9:30 p.m., one Ibrahim Gana, aged 25, a resident of Sokunkpan Village, who had been ill and on admission at a hospital, sadly passed away.

“Following his death, his brothers accused the Chief Imam of being responsible for his demise. In an act of mob violence, they mobilised others and attacked the cleric with offensive weapons, leading to his death.”

Adetoun disclosed that four suspects have been arrested while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices.

She further cautioned members of the public against resorting to jungle justice.

emphasising that “such actions are criminal and punishable under the law.”

The Police Command urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies and reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining peace, safety, and order across the state.

Meanwhile, security operatives have been deployed to the area to forestall further unrest, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
