… Mob Action Averted

By Cyril Ozorhampo

Tension has been reported in parts of Enugu State following allegations of mob attempts to attack certain individuals over claims of same-sex relationships.

According to local sources, unrest began after rumours circulated within some communities, accusing unnamed residents of engaging in same-sex activities.

Eyewitnesses said a group of youths mobilised in response to the allegations, raising concerns about possible mob action.

The individuals at the centre of the allegations were reportedly able to leave the area before any harm occurred. Details surrounding their identities and the claims remain unverified at the time of filing this report.

Efforts to reach community leaders in the affected areas for official comments were ongoing, while no formal statement had been issued. Similarly, attempts to get confirmation from police authorities had not been successful as of press time.

Observers note that mob action—often referred to as “jungle justice”—remains a recurring concern in parts of Nigeria, frequently driven by unverified allegations and heightened public sentiment.

Legal experts have continued to caution against such actions, stressing that they undermine the rule of law. They emphasise that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the nature of the allegations.
