Taraba govt signs executive orders to curb drug abuse, political thuggery, illegal resource exploitation

Taraba state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has signed three Executive Orders aimed at addressing security, social and environmental challenges in the state, with a focus on combating drug abuse, political thuggery and the illegal exploitation of natural resources.
The Executive Orders, signed over the weekend, are designed to strengthen the enforcement of existing laws, enhance public safety and protect communities affected by environmental degradation caused by illegal activities.
One of the Executive Orders reinforces the prohibition of drug abuse by providing stronger legal backing for the enforcement of laws against the abuse of illicit drugs and controlled substances.
“The measure became necessary following increasing concerns over the growing incidence of substance abuse and its links to criminality, violence and social instability,” Kefas said.
According to the government, drug abuse has emerged as a major threat to the future of young people, contributing to insecurity, family breakdown, declining productivity and other criminal activities.
The order also supports public enlightenment campaigns, rehabilitation programmes and youth development initiatives while empowering relevant authorities to prevent, monitor and prosecute drug-related offences.
Governor Kefas also signed an Executive Order banning political thuggery, describing the move as a proactive measure to sustain the peace and stability currently enjoyed in Taraba state ahead of the next election cycle.
The order prohibits the recruitment, sponsorship, financing, harbouring or use of political thugs by individuals, groups or political interests. It is expected to curb electoral violence, voter intimidation, destruction of property and other unlawful acts commonly associated with political contests.
The third Executive Order targets environmental degradation and seeks to protect host communities from the impact of illegal exploitation of natural resources.
The government expressed concern over the activities of illegal miners, loggers and other unauthorised operators, noting that their activities have destroyed farmlands and water sources while threatening the safety and livelihoods of affected communities.
“The order will strengthens measures against the illegal exploitation of natural resources, promotes environmental sustainability and safeguards the rights and welfare of communities hosting legitimate resource development activities.”, Kefas stated.
The state government called on citizens, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, political stakeholders, civil society organisations and security agencies to support the implementation of the Executive Orders in the interest of peace, security and sustainable development.
