Spain coach, De la Fuente names top two midfielders currently

Spain national team manager, Luis de la Fuente, has named Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi as the second-best midfielder globally, behind Rodri, in light of Spain’s World Cup triumph.

Rodri led Spain to a victory against Argentina in the World Cup final last weekend and surpassed Lionel Messi to secure the Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament’s best player.

In contrast, Zubimendi only made a single substitute appearance during the World Cup, stepping in for Rodri during the first half of extra time in last Sunday’s final.

Despite his limited playing time throughout Spain’s World Cup journey, De la Fuente emphasized the significance of the Arsenal midfielder within his squad.

In a discussion with TVE, De la Fuente addressed those who questioned Rodri’s influence for Spain prior to the World Cup, specifically mentioning Zubimendi in his remarks.

He stated, “With all due respect, and I do not intend to offend anyone, I believe that doubting Rodri is an affront to football intelligence, without a doubt.

“He is the finest player in the world in his role, and with Martin Zubimendi as his backup, who is also an exceptional player, he is undoubtedly the second best in the world.

“However, we understood the necessity of adhering to a process and the timelines we established. He improved with each match, and the reality is that Rodri, even at 50 percent capacity, surpasses many other players.”

De La Fuente was also questioned regarding the violent incidents instigated by Argentina’s players and coaching staff following the conclusion of the match.

He said, “That is intolerable, unacceptable, and cannot be allowed.”
