Reps to reconvene plenary after hours of closed door session

After spending almost an hour in a closed-door session, members of the House of Representatives left the green chamber without adjourning or making any formal communication on the outcome of their deliberations.
However, Vanguard gathered from one of the lawmakers who did not want to be named that members are expected to reconvene within the next two hours.
“Some of us will be having a meeting with the Deputy Speaker, while others are meeting at the caucus level, but we are expected to return to the chamber in two hours,” he said.
The House had adjourned its plenary session for seven days on Tuesday to address issues surrounding the non-payment of indigenous contractors since 2024 and the non-implementation of the Capital components of the 2025 budget.
However, the lawmakers made a dramatic U-turn later that evening, announcing their decision to resume plenary the next day. The decision was conveyed in an internal memo issued by the Clerk to the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria.
Also confirming the development, the House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi, said in a statement on Tuesday night that the reconvening was informed by “positive developments arising from engagements and interventions across various levels of government concerning issues that informed the earlier adjournment.”
According to Rotimi, the early resumption would enable the House leadership to brief members on progress made in addressing the concerns raised by the contractors and other matters of national importance.
“At Wednesday’s plenary, the House is expected to formally rescind its earlier adjournment resolution to enable proceedings to continue,” Rotimi stated, urging all members to be present.
Meanwhile, the indigenous contractors, who had vowed to continue their protest daily for a week, were again seen demonstrating at the National Assembly gate on Wednesday.
Upon resumption of plenary, the visibly tensed lawmakers immediately called for an executive (closed-door) session to deliberate on pressing issues.
