Presidency rebukes fake Trump post attacking Tinubu over Maiduguri bombings

ABUJA – The Presidency on Tuesday condemned a social media post falsely attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, which criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allegedly neglecting his duties amid the recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The post, which spread widely online, claimed that Nigeria was experiencing “massive, coordinated suicide bombings” while President Tinubu was on a state visit to the United Kingdom. It accused him of prioritizing diplomatic engagements over security and protection of citizens.

Reacting, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the post as a fabrication. “Enemies of Nigeria are always at work, always ready to fabricate anything,” he said in a statement on his X platform.

The presidency’s statement followed reports of the Maiduguri bombings, which killed at least 23 people and injured several others. Onanuga’s clarification emphasized that the post attributed to Trump did not reflect reality and was intended to mislead Nigerians.

He urged the public to remain calm and rely on verified sources, noting that the government continues to respond to security challenges and remains committed to protecting citizens.

Below is the fabricated post:

“The situation in Nigeria is a TOTAL DISASTER. Massive, coordinated suicide bombings tonight in Maiduguri,” the post reads.

“A hospital, a major market, the post office—all hit! Many innocent people killed. This is what happens when you have NO LEADERSHIP and open borders for terrorists!

“While his country is in a state of NATIONAL EMERGENCY, President Tinubu is currently in the UK on a “State Visit.”

Unbelievable! Shaking hands and having fancy dinners while his people are being blown up?

“I don’t think so! Prime Minister Starmer should tell him to get on a plane and GO HOME IMMEDIATELY. You don’t stay abroad during a crisis like this.

“A real leader is on the ground with the military and the people, not cutting ribbons in London. Nigeria is a great country with wonderful people, but they are being let down by a government that isn’t focused on STRENGTH and SECURITY.

“Close the borders, find the terrorists, and PROTECT YOUR CITIZENS. Everything else can wait. TRUTH!”
