Power Crisis: Grid collapse rate has reduced under Adelabu’s leadership - Aide

The Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power, Adedayo Olowoniyi, has said the rate of national grid collapses has declined under the leadership of the Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, despite recent challenges in electricity supply.
Olowoniyi made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on The Morning Show on ARISE Television, where he addressed concerns about persistent outages and recent disruptions in power supply across the country.
Responding to questions on grid instability, he maintained that the data shows improvement over time.
“I’ll go to the grid collapse that you indicated. If you go by data and actually look at the number of grid collapses annually, before the Honourable Minister took over, it’s actually reduced the rate of grid collapse,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to assess developments in the power sector over a longer period rather than focusing only on recent setbacks.
“I think sometimes… we look at just the immediate, and we’re not actually looking at the trajectory of how the improvement has been coming. And I can tell you that in the last two years, we’ve recorded the highest peak of generation,” Olowoniyi stated.
Highlighting performance indicators, he said the sector has recorded notable gains over the past few years.
“In the last two years, we’ve recorded the highest peak of generation. We’ve recorded the highest average generation. We’ve recorded the highest average distribution consumption of energy, and there was significant stability in electricity… until the last sort of two to three months,” he said.
According to him, the recent deterioration in supply is largely linked to challenges in gas infrastructure, which he described as critical to sustaining electricity generation.
“This specific issue is an isolated issue that is definitely related to gas infrastructure, and the only way to resolve these types of issues is more investment in gas infrastructure, a more sustainable power sector that would ensure that gas companies are willing to invest more to ensure a sustainable supply of gas down the road,” he explained.
Olowoniyi added that reforms and policies introduced by the ministry have already begun to yield positive results, noting that previous improvements made recent outages more noticeable to consumers.
“A lot of the strategy and the implementation that the Honorable Minister has driven through the Ministry of Power have already shown a lot of significant improvement. And that’s why I can say that when this type of shortage comes in, people actually feel it more,” he said.
He further attributed the reduction in grid collapses to ongoing efforts within the sector, insisting that “the rate of grid collapsing reduced because the right things are being done.”
