Police begin crackdown on improper number plates in Kwara

The Police command in Kwara has begun a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles with improper registration number plates.

The exercise begins on Monday, targeting covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced, altered or missing plates.

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Ilorin by the command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.

Commissioner of Police, Kwara Command, Mr Ojo Adekimi, said the action followed a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu.

Adekimi said the enforcement was designed to strengthen public safety and prevent criminals from hiding their identities.

He explained that some criminals use concealed or unregistered vehicles to commit unlawful activities.

The commissioner directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and the State Traffic Officer to enforce the directive.

He ordered officers to begin full compliance operations across their respective jurisdictions throughout the state.

Adekimi warned that any vehicle violating the directive would be impounded and investigated under existing laws.

He stressed that the command would not grant any offender exemptions or special treatment.

“There will be no preferential treatment, exemption or special consideration for anyone.

“The law will be applied fairly, firmly and without compromise,” the commissioner said.

He advised motorists and vehicle owners to remove all coverings or obstructions from their number plates.

The police boss in Kwara urged residents to ensure only valid and clearly visible registration plates were displayed.

He also encouraged vehicle owners to keep relevant documents up to date and readily available for inspection.

According to him, the measure would improve vehicle identification and support criminal investigations.

He said the exercise would also assist security agencies in tracking fleeing suspects.

Adekimi noted that criminals had increasingly used hidden or altered plates to evade detection.

He warned that deliberate tampering, covering or operating without proper plates would attract legal action.

“Anyone found violating the directive will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.

The commissioner assured residents that officers would conduct the exercise professionally and impartially.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, property and maintaining security across Kwara.

Adekimi called for public support and urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly.
