Police arrest two suspects after Bayelsa varsity student dies in suspected cult clash

Operatives of the Amassoma Division of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested two suspects and recovered two locally made pistols and two rounds of 9mm live ammunition following a suspected cult-related clash in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests followed an incident that claimed the life of a 200-level student of Niger Delta University (NDU).
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m.
According to him, the deceased, identified as Ebube Jonathan, a 200-level Management Science student of Niger Delta University, was attacked by yet-to-be-identified assailants along Kabaka Street in Amassoma.
“The victim was macheted, shot and later confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” Mohammed said.
He added that operatives of the Amassoma Division launched a follow-up operation at about 4:00 p.m. the same day, leading to the arrest of two suspects identified as Godswin Adobu, 24, a 300-level student of Fine and Applied Arts, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Niger Delta University, and Tarilaefa Fesingha, 21.
According to the police, the suspects were arrested at Ending Pele, Amassoma, where they had allegedly mobilised to carry out a reprisal attack following the killing.
During the operation, officers recovered two locally made pistols and two rounds of live 9mm ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police, Edebor Iyamah, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling cultism and other violent crimes across Bayelsa State.
He warned individuals involved in criminal activities to desist or face the full weight of the law, while urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state. Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
