Police arrest Baruwa after taking over NURTW secretariat in Abuja
Police on Monday arrested Tajudeen Baruwa hours after he led members of his faction to seize control of the National Union of Road Transport Workers national secretariat in Abuja, in a dramatic escalation of the union’s prolonged leadership crisis.
Baruwa and his supporters had stormed the union’s headquarters earlier in the day, wresting control from the faction headed by Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, before authorities moved in and took him into custody.
The takeover and subsequent arrest mark the latest flashpoint in a bitter internal power struggle between the Baruwa and MC Oluomo factions that has torn through the union since 2024. Members of the NURTW had elected MC Oluomo as National President in November 2024, but a court subsequently ruled in Baruwa’s favour when the dispute escalated into litigation, laying the groundwork for Monday’s dramatic events.
