Plateau govt condemns ‘barbaric’ mob killing of UniJos student

Jos – The Plateau State Government has condemned in strong terms the mob killing of University of Jos graduate  Ibrahim Mbaya, describing the act as a barbaric display of jungle justice that must not be tolerated in a civilised society.

In a statement issued on Friday  by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government said it received with profound shock and deep sorrow the reports of the graduate’s death following a mob assault in Jos over allegations of a missing mobile phone.

“Government strongly condemns this barbaric act of jungle justice, which has no place in a civilised, democratic, and law-abiding society.

The sanctity of human life is sacred, and no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands under any circumstance,” the statement declared.

The commissioner noted that while investigations were still ongoing to establish the full facts, it was deeply disturbing that a young life was cut short on the basis of an unverified accusation.

On behalf of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the government extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased, the management, staff and students of the University of Jos, as well as the government and people of Borno State.

It expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force and urged security agencies to ensure a thorough, impartial and expeditious probe. Anyone found to have participated in, facilitated or aided the crime, the government insisted, must be identified and brought to justice according to the law.

Residents of the state were called upon to reject mob action and violence in all its forms. Suspected offenders, the statement stressed, should always be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.

“No grievance, suspicion, or allegation justifies the unlawful taking of human life,” it added.

Governor Mutfwang’s administration, the commissioner said, remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen, and ensuring that justice is pursued through lawful means rather than violence.
