Photos: Tenants, construction workers escape death as 2-storey collapses in Lagos

Occupants of a two-storey building under construction at 5, Modupe Ola Street, Onipetesi Estate, Mangoro, Lagos, narrowly escaped death following the partial collapse which occurred in the early hours of today, Thursday.
Five construction workers, who were rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries are currently receiving treatment at hospital.
The incident happened around 5.45 a.m., amid slight rainfall that has been pouring in the last three days.
Controller General, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.
Adeseye told Vanguard that the State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at 5:39 a.m., and arrived at 6:24 a.m., and was able to evacuate the occupants alive.
She explained that preliminary investigation revealed that the structure was originally a bungalow before the owner begun converting it into a two-storey building. It was under construction, while occupants remained on the ground floor.
“The incident involved a partial collapse at the rear of the building. The situation is currently under control.
“Responding units included the Ikeja Fire Station and Agege Fire Station.
“Five construction male workers, adult were rescued alive, sustaining varying degrees of injuries. They were promptly transported to the hospital for treatment,” Adeseye stated.
