Oyo govt proceeds with Ibadan coronation despite absence of three high chiefs

The Oyo State Government on Friday went ahead with the coronation of selected high chiefs in Ibadan, despite the absence of Sharafadeen Alli, Adebayo Akande and Lateef Oyelade, who had earlier notified the authorities of their unavailability and requested a postponement.

The ceremony, held at the historic Mapo Hall, drew dignitaries, traditional leaders and government officials, signalling the state’s resolve to proceed with the event as earlier scheduled.

The development followed a statement issued on Thursday by the Olubadan’s palace, confirming that the affected high chiefs had formally communicated their inability to attend and sought a deferment.

The notification, according to the palace, was duly conveyed to the state government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

Despite this, the government maintained its position, insisting that the coronation should go ahead in line with established plans, a move that underscored its commitment to the continuity of traditional administrative processes in Ibadanland.

At the ceremony, some members of the Olubadan-in-Council were present, led by the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Jajudeen Ajibola, who represented the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

Their presence lent institutional backing to the proceedings, even as notable absences drew attention.

Conspicuously absent from the event was the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, whose non-attendance added to the list of high-profile figures missing at the ceremony.

Observers noted that the turnout reflected a mix of loyalty to traditional authority and adherence to government directives, highlighting the delicate balance between customary institutions and state oversight in chieftaincy matters.

Meanwhile, the Olubadan’s palace had earlier dismissed speculations of a rift between the monarch and the Oyo State Government, reiterating that Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan remain on cordial terms.

Security was visibly tightened around Mapo Hall, while cultural displays and traditional rites were carried out in line with Ibadan customs, lending colour and significance to the occasion.
