Oyo: Accord crisis deepens as Oriyomi Hamzat, Busari rmerge from parallel primaries

ABUJA — Fresh crisis has erupted in the Accord Party after two governorship candidates, popular broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat and Olakunle ‘Gudugudu’ Busari, emerged from parallel primary elections in Oyo State, deepening an already bitter leadership dispute within the party.

The development has further exposed divisions within Accord ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, with rival factions questioning the legitimacy of the primary process and accusing each other of undermining the party structure.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, the factional National Secretary of the party, Muktar Abdallah, said the camp loyal to Prof. Chris Imumolen had rejected the outcome of the disputed primaries and disowned both candidates.

“It is embarrassing that the illegally imposed National Chairman and National Secretary, driven by personal interests and desperation for financial gains, could not put their house together, thereby exposing the party to public ridicule by producing parallel candidates from the same process,” Abdallah said.

The faction said the emergence of two governorship candidates from the same political camp reflected what it described as confusion and a breakdown of leadership within the rival faction.

Abdallah said the crisis had further raised concerns among party loyalists over the capacity of the faction to manage the affairs of the party.

He disclosed that the party’s ‘authentic national leadership’ under Imumolen had constituted a disciplinary committee to investigate actions the faction considered damaging to the image of the party.

“The disgraceful drama witnessed in Oyo State will not go unchecked,” he said, adding that the actions of the factional leaders had brought “embarrassment” to the party.

The faction also announced plans to conduct a fresh governorship primary election in Oyo State, insisting that the exercise would be transparent, credible and acceptable to party stakeholders.

According to Abdallah, “the new primary would produce the rightful candidate that will genuinely represent the interests of Accord members and the people of Oyo State.”

He added that the party remained committed to internal democracy, justice and the rule of law and would not allow the image and integrity of the party to be destroyed.
