UMUAHIA – Governor Alex Otti has ordered the immediate implementation of the approved state allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Abia, expressing displeasure over delays despite earlier approval and budgetary provision.

The governor gave the directive on Tuesday while receiving the newly posted NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, at the Government House, Umuahia.

Apparently surprised that the payments had yet to commence, Otti directed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development to work with the Head of Service to remove all administrative bottlenecks delaying implementation.

“I approved the allowance and made provision for it. If it has not been implemented, then it defeats the purpose. Whatever the problem is should be resolved immediately,” the governor said.

Earlier, Tanimu appealed for the speedy implementation of the approved allowance and thanked the state government for its sustained support to the scheme, citing the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp, construction of internal roads, installation of solar streetlights, improved camp logistics, provision of a new secretariat and approval of enhanced welfare for corps members.

Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of corps members, describing them as critical contributors to the state’s education and healthcare sectors. He also assured the new coordinator of the state’s hospitality and support throughout his tenure.
