Nursing committee disowns ‘nurse’ linked to Ogun corps member’s death

Ogun State Nursing and Midwifery Committee has distanced itself from Kehinde Adesanya, a suspect linked to the death of a corps member in Abeokuta, declaring that the individual is not a registered nurse.

The committee made this known in a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. Serifat Aminu, on behalf of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), led by its registrar, Dr. Ndagi Al-Hassan, following an investigation into the incident.

According to the statement, findings revealed that the suspect is neither licensed nor recognised by the council to practise nursing in Ogun State or anywhere in the country.

Dr. Aminu said: “In line with our regulatory mandate, we conducted a thorough review of available records and necessary verification checks. The outcome clearly shows that the individual in question is not registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.”

She described reports referring to the suspect as a nurse as misleading, stressing that such misrepresentation undermines the integrity of the profession.

“The nursing profession is guided by strict training, certification and ethical standards. Referring to an unqualified individual as a nurse is not only incorrect but also damaging to the image of the profession,” she added.

The committee noted that the incident underscores the growing menace of quackery in the health sector, warning that unqualified individuals posing as healthcare professionals pose grave risks to public safety.

Dr. Aminu further stated: “Quackery remains a serious threat, as such individuals lack the requisite knowledge, skills and regulatory oversight needed to provide safe and effective care. Their activities can lead to severe health complications and even preventable deaths.”

She cautioned members of the public against patronising unlicensed practitioners and advised residents to always verify the credentials of healthcare providers before seeking medical attention.

“We urge the public to seek care only from recognised and accredited health facilities and to promptly report suspected cases of quackery to relevant authorities,” she said.

The committee assured that it would continue to collaborate with government agencies to identify, apprehend and prosecute offenders, to safeguard public health and uphold professional standards.
