NSCDC launches manhunt for vandals who stole N1m armoured cable in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has launched a manhunt for a gang of suspected vandals who allegedly stole armoured cable worth about N1 million from Government Unity School in Ringim Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesman, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Saturday.

He said the incident reportedly occurred at about 2 am on Thursday, July 30, 2026, when more than 10 suspected vandals invaded the school premises and overpowered the security guards on duty before carrying out the theft.

According to the NSCDC, the suspects vandalised and carted away 12 metres of 75 mm² armoured cable connected to the school’s transformer, causing significant damage to public infrastructure.

The command said the stolen cable was valued between N900,000 and N1.05 million.

ASC Badruddeen said personnel from the NSCDC Ringim Divisional Office responded promptly after receiving a distress report and commenced preliminary investigations.

He said findings indicated that the suspects overpowered three security guards stationed at different locations within the school premises before fleeing with the cable.

Reacting to the incident, the NSCDC State Commandant, Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, condemned the act, describing it as a criminal attack on critical national assets and infrastructure.

Ingawa urged security personnel attached to schools and other public institutions to remain vigilant and immediately alert security agencies whenever they observe suspicious movements or gatherings of unidentified persons.

He also appealed to residents to provide timely and credible information that would assist security agencies in preventing and combating vandalism and other criminal activities.

The commandant assured residents that the NSCDC had intensified efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute all those connected with the crime.
