‘No cause for alarm’ – NCDC says on COVID-19 case in Cross River

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, on Wednesday confirmed a single case of COVID-19 in Cross River State, assuring Nigerians that there is no evidence of widespread transmission and that the situation is under control.

In a press statement issued by its Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, the agency disclosed that the confirmed case has been isolated and is currently receiving care in line with national treatment guidelines.

“The patient is in stable condition and responding to care,” the NCDC stated, adding that the case is the only one confirmed so far in the state.

The agency noted that following confirmation of the case, the Cross River State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the NCDC and development partners, has activated all necessary response measures to contain any potential spread.

“These include contact tracing, enhanced surveillance, and infection prevention and control measures. All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately,” it said.

Reassuring the public, the NCDC emphasised that there is currently no indication of community transmission in the state.

“There is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission. The detection of this case reflects that our surveillance systems remain functional and responsive,” the statement added.

The agency urged Nigerians not to panic but to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to public health advisories to prevent possible spread of the virus.

The NCDC advised Nigerians to maintain good hand and respiratory hygiene, stay at home and seek medical attention if unwell, and rely only on updates from official public health authorities.

The Centre assured that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as necessary.
