Nigerian govt debunks terror attack on FGGC Monguno, says students safe

The Federal Government has denied reports circulating on social media alleging that the Federal Government Girls’ College, FGGC, Monguno, Borno State, was attacked by terrorists, insisting that the institution remains safe and fully secured.

The Federal Ministry of Education made the clarification in a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo.

The clarification follows widespread reports linking the Federal Government Girls’ College to the recent security incident in Monguno, which triggered anxiety among parents after reports of casualties emerged.

“The Ministry states unequivocally that there was no attack on Federal Government Girls’ College, Monguno. The school remains safe and secure, with all students, staff, and boarding facilities fully protected and accounted for,” the statement read.

The ministry explained that teaching, boarding and other school activities have continued without disruption, describing reports linking the institution to the incident as false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among parents and members of the public.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed that the safety and welfare of students in all Federal Government Colleges remain a priority of the Federal Government.

Alausa said the college currently operates under robust security arrangements designed to protect students, staff and school facilities.

The ministry further clarified that the victims involved in the security incident were remedial students outside the Federal Government Girls’ College, noting that the Borno State Government has already commenced measures to ensure their safety and welfare.

“No student of Federal Government Girls’ College, Monguno, was involved in the incident being falsely linked to the school,” the statement added.

The ministry also urged journalists, bloggers, social media users and online platforms to verify information through official channels before publishing reports.

It warned that the spread of unverified information could create unnecessary fear, undermine public confidence and distract authorities from ongoing efforts to maintain safe learning environments across the country.

Parents and guardians were advised to remain calm, with the ministry assuring them that there is no security threat at FGGC Monguno and reaffirming its commitment to working with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to protect students in all Federal Government Colleges nationwide.
