Nigeria, Serbia renew commitment to stronger ties

Nigeria and the Republic of Serbia have renewed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Engr. Abass Braimah, to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

The ceremony, held on Monday at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, formally accredited Braimah as the Non-Resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Serbia, with residence in Budapest, Hungary.

In his remarks, Braimah expressed his readiness to work closely with the Serbian government, diplomatic community, private-sector actors and other stakeholders to identify new opportunities for engagement and consolidate existing areas of cooperation.

A statement issued yesterday by his office and made available to Vanguard said the ceremony represented an important moment in the continuing diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and Serbia, whose relations span more than six decades.

The statement said the presentation provided an opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their commitment to building on their historic ties and translating their longstanding friendship into deeper and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Braimah, while conveying the warm greetings of the Nigerian government and people to President Vučić, as well as the government and people of Serbia, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries.

The former member of the House of Representatives emphasised the importance of expanding existing collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including political and diplomatic engagement, trade and investment, economic cooperation, education and culture.

He said stronger cooperation in those areas would create tangible benefits for the peoples of both countries.

According to the statement, Braimah’s diplomatic mandate comes at a time when stronger bilateral partnerships, economic diplomacy and people-to-people relations have assumed greater importance in the international system.

It added that the renewed engagement between Nigeria and Serbia was expected to deepen understanding of the respective priorities of both countries and create fresh avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.

The accreditation of Braimah therefore marks a new phase in Nigeria-Serbia relations, with both countries expected to build on their historical ties through sustained dialogue, increased economic interaction and stronger institutional partnerships.
