Nigeria records over 1000 deaths in road crashes – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, today said that 1,374 deaths were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025 (Q4’25) with males accounting for the majority of deaths.

The Bureau disclosed this in its Road Transport Data for Q4’25 noting that a total of 1,085 males and 289 females were killed during the period.

According to NBS, 2,731 road traffic crashes were recorded in Q4’25 , representing an increase of 12.2 percent compared to the 2,434 crashes recorded in Q3’25.

“In Q4 2025, a total of 2,731 road traffic crashes were recorded. This represents an increase of 12.2 percent compared to the 2,434 crashes recorded in Q3 2025, and a 6.72 percent increase relative to the 2,559 crashes recorded in the corresponding period of 2024 (Q4 2024).

“Disaggregation by severity shows that serious crashes accounted for the highest proportion with 1,775 cases, followed by fatal crashes with 677 cases, while minor crashes recorded the least with 279 cases.
“Analysis of fatalities by gender indicates that males accounted for the majority of deaths.

“A total of 1,085 males were killed, representing 78.97 percent of total fatalities, while 289 females were killed, accounting for 21.03 percent.

“ During the period under review, 6,561 males were injured, accounting for 75.19 percent of the total injured persons, while 2,165 females were injured, representing 24.81 percent.

“The number of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes stood at 4,059 in Q4 2025, indicating an increase of 9.41 percent compared to the 3,710 vehicles recorded in Q3’25.

“ In terms of zonal distribution, the South-West recorded the highest number of crashes with 763 cases, followed by the North-Central with 744 cases, while the South-South recorded the least with 152 cases.

“With respect to casualties, the North-Central zone recorded the highest number with 2,649 casualties,
followed by the North-West with 2,497 casualties, while the South-South recorded the least with 420
casualties.”
