NANS protest in Osun over poor power supply

Students under the banner of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) staged a protest in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday, demanding an end to the country’s worsening electricity supply.

Led by Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo, the protesters marched from Ataoja, Ogo-Oluwa, Fakunle, through Olaiya to the IBEDC regional office at Station Road, carrying placards with slogans such as “Stop Epileptic Power Supply”, “Increase Power Output”, and “Fix Our Power Now”.

Speaking to journalists at Olaiya, Adeyemo said the protest was aimed at drawing attention to the impact of erratic electricity on students’ academic performance and the livelihoods of their families.

“We are here to register our displeasure over the current electricity crisis nationwide. Students cannot thrive in darkness. Electricity is a basic necessity for academic and societal success,” Adeyemo said.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restore stable power supply, warning that the protest was only a preliminary action. “If our calls are ignored, we are prepared to mobilize on a much larger scale across the Southwest,” he added.

Supporting the call, Ogunsola Adewale, South-West Coordinator of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), said the student population in the region could stage a mass demonstration at IBEDC if the authorities failed to act on NANS’ demands.

The protest underscores growing frustration among students over Nigeria’s epileptic power supply, which they say threatens both education and economic activities.
