Motorists trapped for hours as containers fall on Otedola Bridge

Motorists heading into Lagos along the Otedola Bridge on Wednesday were stranded for hours after two 20-foot containers fell from a Mack articulated truck, blocking the expressway.

The incident caused a traffic backup extending beyond Kara Bridge. Authorities said the truck experienced a battery-related mechanical fault, and during an attempted private recovery, it overturned, causing the containers to dislodge. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly mobilised a Rescue and Recovery Team and collaborated with Zone 2 personnel to manage traffic, divert vehicles, and ensure safety. A high-capacity tow truck and a heavy-duty crane were deployed to lift and reposition the containers, allowing for a safe clearance operation.

LASTMA Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, noted that normal traffic flow was progressively restored after the successful removal of the truck and containers. General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki also sent additional personnel to support emergency operations.
