Mini bus plunges into Ogoja River, five feared dead

OGOJA — Five persons have reportedly drowned in Ogoja, northern Cross River State, after an intra-city mini bus travelling from Igoli to Abakpa veered off a bridge and plunged into the river.

According to local reports, the driver was the only survivor, managing to escape before the bus sank.

“It’s unfortunate. Abakpa River Bridge doesn’t have any protective barriers or railings—nothing to prevent accidents like this. Something urgent needs to be done,” a resident, Idah Roland, told Vanguard.

The bridge, currently under renovation by the state government, is narrow and frequently congested, especially due to the high number of motorcycles navigating the tight stretch. Residents say crashes are common, with several vehicles in the past skidding off the bumpy spots into the river.

Efforts to reach officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), whose office is close to the accident scene, were unsuccessful as they were reportedly out on patrol.
