Meet Segun Phillips, Nigerian billionaire who left banking to unlock property investment opportunities
A Nigerian real estate entrepreneur and Managing Director of Sabre Works Real Estate Investment Limited, Segun Phillips has built a career helping Nigerians explore property investment opportunities after transitioning from the banking sector.
Phillips began his professional journey in banking, where he worked with clients on investments, savings, asset accumulation and capital growth.
However, his experience in the financial sector also exposed him to the potential of another asset class — real estate.
Born and raised in Lagos, Phillips witnessed the city’s rapid transformation as previously undeveloped areas evolved into major residential and commercial districts.
The growth of locations across Lagos, including Lekki and Ikeja, reinforced his belief in the long-term potential of property investment.
According to the entrepreneur, his banking experience shaped his approach to real estate, particularly his emphasis on investment discipline, location, capital appreciation and long-term value.
His transition into real estate eventually led to the establishment of Sabre Works Real Estate Investment Limited, a company focused on providing property opportunities to Nigerians both at home and abroad.
Unlike many real estate executives who began their careers in construction or property sales, Phillips entered the industry with a background in banking and investment.
This experience has influenced the company’s approach to property development, with its projects selected around factors including location, growth potential and long-term value.
Among Sabre Works’ projects is Grosvenors Place, located at 100 Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos.
The commercial development is designed to feature office spaces, retail outlets and lifestyle amenities as part of efforts to contribute to the growth of Ikeja’s commercial district.
The company also has Oranje Apartments, a three-bedroom luxury apartment development located at Atlantic Nominee, Lekki-Ajah, Lagos, targeted at young professionals and families seeking modern homes.
Other projects include Bewaji Imperial, a luxury residential development, as well as Maldives Gardens in Ibeju-Lekki and Maldives Gardens in Epe.
The Maldives Gardens projects are positioned as land investment opportunities in emerging areas of Lagos with development potential.
Phillips’ move from banking to real estate reflects his belief that property can provide investors with tangible assets that can appreciate over time and potentially be passed on to future generations.
Through Sabre Works, he aims to make access to prime property and affordable luxury homes easier for Nigerians at home and abroad.
For Phillips, the transition was not a move away from investment but an attempt to apply the principles he learned in banking to the real estate sector.
