Meet Hervé Renard, two-time AFCON winner tasked with saving Tunisia’s World Cup

French coach Hervé Renard is set to take charge of Tunisia after the country’s football federation parted ways with coach Sabri Lamouchi following the team’s 5-1 defeat to Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation announced on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the 56-year-old to lead the Carthage Eagles until the end of the World Cup.

“The president of the Tunisian Football Federation, Moez Nassari, announced that an official agreement had been reached with French coach Hervé Renard for him to take charge of the national football team until the end of the 2026 World Cup,” Tunisian public broadcaster Télévision Tunisienne reported.

Renard arrives with a wealth of experience in African football and on the global stage.

The Frenchman made headlines at the 2022 World Cup when he guided Saudi Arabia to a stunning 2-1 victory over eventual champions Argentina in the group stage.

His African coaching journey began with Zambia in 2008 when he led the Chipolopolo to the quarter-finals of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations before returning for a second spell in 2011. That decision paid off as he guided Zambia to their first-ever AFCON title in 2012.

Renard further cemented his place in African football history when he took charge of Côte d’Ivoire in 2014 and led the Elephants to victory at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, making him the first coach to win the tournament with two different countries.

In 2016, he was appointed head coach of Morocco and led the Atlas Lions to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, ending a 20-year absence from football’s biggest stage.

Following Morocco’s surprise exit from the 2019 AFCON, Renard resigned before later taking charge of Saudi Arabia, where he engineered one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history against Argentina in Qatar.

The Carthage Eagles face Japan in their next Group F match on Saturday before taking on the Netherlands in their final group game.
